Reading is Fun started in 2010. I decided to consolidate the forces of Remedial Therapy and Speech Therapy by working with Robyn Reid (Speech Therapist). We both wanted to teach our sons (John and Stuart) to read before they went to school. We started at my home with a few interested friends. We had a lot of fun playing games with letters and sounds. The garden was used to hide letters and the lawn was used to follow an obstacle course to get to the letters. We also used the verandah to play hopscotch with chalk letters.
It was so successful that when our children and some of their friends went to Grade 1 they all wanted to return and continue learning about letters and sounds through discovery and play. We continued with a Grade R class as the interest increased. The practice books were created when the children wanted to practice letters and sounds at home.
Reading is Fun has grown to the point where I am now associated with a school and are taking two classes of ten in each class. I have received a lot of feedback from parents who have completed the Grade R workshop and they say that their children are more confidence when entering Grade 1 as they have experienced hearing individual letters and sounds as well as recognizing and naming sounds.
